What is IPS LCD and what does it do?

IPS LCD is the LCD type in which the liquid crystals turn within the plane; compared with older LCD types the viewing angle is wide and colour shifts less when seen from the side. The panel is still backlit: black is not fully black, contrast trails OLED, and there is no burn-in.

On phones today 'LCD' almost always means IPS; the models whose maker writes it out are here, those writing plain 'LCD' are on their own page. Brightness and refresh rate are not part of the name; check each model's own row.
