Should you buy the Apple M4 Pro?
The Kacbu decision box currently says CONSIDER for the Apple M4 Pro: the specs hold up, but there are not yet enough real owner reports to strengthen the call. Pros, cautions and alternatives are in the decision box at the top of this page.
What does unified memory actually change?
The CPU, GPU and Neural Engine all read from the same pool of memory instead of each having their own and copying data between them. For video editing and machine-learning work that means large files never get duplicated across memory — which is why a 24 GB Mac can handle projects that would need far more RAM on a PC.
M4 Pro or M4 Max?
The Max roughly doubles the GPU cores and memory bandwidth and raises the memory ceiling well past 64 GB, at a significant price step. The Pro is the right chip for most professional work; the Max earns its premium for sustained 3D rendering, large-model machine learning and multi-stream 8K video.
How does it compare with Intel and AMD laptop chips?
On sustained multi-core throughput it trades blows with high-end x86 laptop chips, but it does so at a fraction of their power draw — a Core Ultra 9 275HX can pull 160W where the M4 Pro stays far below that. That efficiency, not raw peak speed, is the actual difference you feel on battery.
