Why did Intel drop Hyper-Threading?
Intel's own data showed most modern workloads on P-cores gained more from single-thread speed and lower power than from a second thread per core. The E-cores still handle the parallel workloads Hyper-Threading used to help with, which is why total thread count dropped from 32 to 24 despite the same core count.
Is it a good gaming CPU?
It is competent but not the class leader β€” AMD's 3D V-Cache chips, including the cheaper Ryzen 7 9800X3D, generally win in games. Where the 285K pulls ahead is efficiency and multi-threaded productivity work, so the right choice depends on whether gaming or heavier workloads matter more.
Can I reuse my old motherboard?
No. The Core Ultra 200S series moves to the new LGA1851 socket, so it requires a new motherboard regardless of what you were running before β€” including LGA1700 boards from 12th–14th-gen Intel chips.
