Phone zoom is three different things and they are easy to confuse: optical zoom magnifies with the lens itself and loses no detail; sensor-crop zoom magnifies by cropping into the middle of a high-resolution sensor and stays clean up to a point; digital zoom enlarges the image and fills the pixels in between by computation.
The 100x in this value is the highest ratio the phone reaches, and not all of it is optical: once the periscope telephoto's optical range runs out, sensor cropping and computational completion take over. A maker's naming — "spatial", "Pro Res" and the like — is its own name for that completion.
